An oxbow is an old term for a bend in a river. And so you will often see oxbow as part of the name of something that is located on a river. A golf course, a housing development, etc.
Oxbow Ecological Center is a Saint Lucie County owned preserve that is adjacent to a stretch of the North Fork of the St Lucie River. Oxbow has a great deal to offer and is one of the best things on the Treasure Coast.
For now, I’m just going to share one pic but I have lots more to share. The pic is of course of the River, but it is taken from Oxbow! The best hike is along the river. To get to the river, one must hike a good distance, and sometimes there are wet areas to cross. The river is tidal, and so tides matter.
This is not a place to plan for a twenty minute walk. Plan and pack for what can be a few hours hike if you take the long trails, or if you get lost, or eaten.
Parts of Oxbow are tame but much is wild. At Oxbow, I have seen, close and personally, Bald Eagle, Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, bobcat, wild hog, otter, and alligator. And many others, and gopher tortoise are especially common. Oh and the cutest armadillos ever! I have photos (not all good) of these and will soon share.
I do suggest that you check out Oxbow! They have special events such as Earth Day where many people attend, at other times, you may walk and see almost no one (human).
